Welcome to sheffield-pat-testing.com
The responsibility falls on you.
As a business owner you already have enough to do. OHS is a complex area, and in regards to testing portable appliance testing (PAT) the law puts corporate responsibility on your shoulders. Does your work day sound like this?
End of month paper work.
Its Monday morning. This week you have to get the VAT returns done, to top it off its pay day on Friday. Your PA has called in sick and the phone has not stopped.
Your new apprentice has offered to make you tea and toast, and you welcome his keen attitude. He sets off to the lunch room.
He has put the toaster on as the kettle boils. He is day dreaming about the weekend as he waits for the toast to pop up. He is day dreaming about his date on Saturday.
Suddenly smoke starts to come out of the toaster. He has pushed a crust in jamming the toaster pop up mechanism.
He panics and grabs a metal butter knife to get the toast out of the toaster. As he puts the knife into the slot he screams.
The electric shock is severe as he was holding onto the metal sink with his other hand for support. He is now locked on to the sink and toaster as his muscles contract with the deadly current. You were not aware the metal toaster had a fault. The earth wire had broken away inside the plug leaving the toaster in a lethal state.
Your heart sinks as you hear the scream. You know something is badly wrong, but now is not the day to find out about what you should have done about PAT testing.
When the OHS inspectors come to your business later that morning they are going to want to see exactly what was in place for testing and maintenance.
We can set that in place for you and send you a yearly reminder depending on your style of business.

Checks should be carried out often enough to ensure there is little chance the equipment will become unsafe between checks.
It is good practice to make a decision on how often each piece of equipment should be checked, write this down, make sure checks are carried out accordingly and write down the results.
You should change how often you carry out checks, according to the number and severity of faults found.
The best way to find out if specialised equipment is safe is to have it inspected and tested by a person with specific competence on that type of equipment.
